The Problem
At the beginning of the project, my focus was more on expanding subtitles and dubs on Netflix for foreigners to become interested in Netflix. After the first study, I realized I was thinking too small, if we can expand subtitles and dubs we would be able to help people learn all different kinds of languages. Since we live in a digital age where most people are visual learners or they learn by hearing and engaging, I thought why not bring that over to Netflix. The purpose was to construct interviews to obtain an understanding of how people actually go about studying a new language.
Research Goal
The research goal was to think of an innovative way that Netflix could incorporate its platform to help people learn a new language. From the conducting interviews, I would question how people study a new language. If they engage with apps, books, shows, or what tricks they do to study and learn how they engage with their chosen platform. I would then use this information and try to see if there is a way Netflix could incorporate some of these ideas into its platform. With Covid keeping people in their house, and most people are bored with nothing to do, picking up a new language would be considered fun and productive. This would increase views as well as increase the want for Netflix. From my previous research, I learned a lot of foreigners didn’t see the value of Netflix, giving people a chance to watch shows and learn a new language would create a new level of value and promote more engagement.
The Solution

When getting into the quiz section you will be presented with a short clip of the scene and have the opportunity to hear what they said and select an answer that matches. If you're still in the beginner stages you can have subtitles to encourage usage and playfulness.
First Set Of Interviews
Goal
The purpose and goal of this research were to think of ways to make Netflix more appealing to foreigners, to see what they think of Netflix, what they like about it, what they think Netflix can improve, or even why they don’t use Netflix. My theory was that foreigners didn’t care too much about Netflix especially the Chinese demographic, because of all the streaming competition in China. While discovering all the information I believe I would be able to come up with ways to help Netflix become more appealing to the demographic as well as become more wanted or even ready for lunch in China. My main theory was that due to the lack of foreign subtitles and dubs, becomes a turn-off for foreigners to buy Netflix.
What was done
For the research, I checked Netflix, Prime Video and Disney plus. I researched what features each one has and compared them to each other. This is where I started to conclude introducing more subtitles, and dubs would increase the Netflix market further into the foreign demographic. I created an interview plan to ask people whose first language isn’t English about what streaming service they use, if they use Netflix, why or why not, and if they see the value of Netflix.
Coding interviews and came to a conclusion
I conducted my first set of interviews around trying to figure out what Netflix users would like to see improved or implemented. For my interviews I wanted a wide audience of different users to see if there might be a similar commonality. It was important to properly screen and have open-ended core questions.
Key Findings
What I learned was that the majority of foreigners didn’t see the value of Netflix due to the lack of subtitles for their native language. They’re still studying English while living in North America and they felt that if Netflix would provide them with subtitles for shows that they would be more inclined to purchase a subscription. One of the people I interviewed had a good point, they suggested instead of trying to create subtitles for every show on Netflix, simply focusing on the most popular Netflix shows that North Americans already love, as well as expanding the subtitles for Netflix Originals.
I also found that the biggest competition to taking over the foreign market is Prime Video a lot of the people had Netflix and Prime video, they said that they would find themselves watching Prime video more often just because they offered subtitles for their language. Some other points people had to improve on Netflix were adding a shared viewing feature with friends to watch shows in sync, incorporating a chat feature, creating a way for people to see what Netflix offers before signing up, and finding a way to show people all the shows and movies that are available before they sign up. I believe that if we focus on creating subtitles on the most popular shows, and Netflix Original content we would create more of a want for foreigners to subscribe to Netflix. If we focus on expanding our Chinese subtitles and dubs we could create a want for Netflix in China, which would put us into a wider market than any of our competitors. We would be able to dominate the market on a larger worldwide scale.
Competitive Analysis
Who are the competitors?
Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus shouldn't be a surprise, but what they bring to the table are completely different. Through my research, I was able to find out what their strength and weakness were. While finding ways of implementing these strengths into helping people learn new languages through watching shows and movies in a playful way.
Idea Development
From conducting my first set of interviews I realized that a great way to increase users, was to create a way where Netflix could help people learn a new language through watching shows and movies. I ended up moving on to a competitive analysis and a second set of interviews to find out how people study learning a new language.

Key Findings
In conclusion, it seems that most people have an easier time learning a new language by using Netflix. Netflix is a great tool for studying language it helps beginners watch movies in other languages and have their native subtitles to help them become more familiar with words. Once they become more advanced they can watch the movies with subtitles that the movie is in. This is where expanding the subtitle and dub category becomes important, for example, if someone wants to learn Spanish and they want to watch their favourite show if they could watch it in Spanish with Spanish subtitles it would help them make more connections and learn the language easier.
Idea
Netflix could incorporate an AI that when someone is learning a language they can select what difficulty they want to start at and the AI would track how often they watch, and determine their language level. The AI will start to recommend shows where the actors speak faster, you could also test yourself by playing shows without subtitles, or if you’re watching a show an episode might not have subtitles to test yourself to see if you can understand basic language in the show. Netflix could also add an interactive feature that while you’re watching the show it would explain common words that are used often and it will even replay that scene for you to say it with the show, but you can choose to have this feature or not so you don get annoyed as a user.
Observation, Reflection, and Themes
When interviewing each person I was able to find at least one interesting insight into the way they study another language. One participant wasn’t a fan of using apps but preferred to use textbooks to study they also included language learning crossword puzzles to help keep words fresh in her mind. The most interesting was that they would use Netflix to study English, but they would watch English shows with English subtitles to help expand their vocabulary. Participant 2 just like Participant 1 wasn’t a fan of using apps due to them sounding “robotic”. When they were learning Spanish from their partner and their mother, they would watch Spanish shows with English subtitles to hear the language be spoken properly, and felt this way they would get the proper grammatical way people speak the language and pick up on slang. Participant 3 is a fashion designer living in New York learning English, they said that when they were living in Korea they would watch Netflix and Youtube helping them learn English. What was the most interesting thing was that they used apps like “EWA and CAKE” that would show small clips from movies, and shows, that taught them how to pronounce words properly, and learn useful real-world phrases. Participant 4 on the other hand was using apps to help them learn 5 languages, a mix of Duo Lingo and Memrise. They also said that they would use Netflix to help them study just like the rest. What I did find interesting was that they said, learning 4 of the languages wasn’t too bad, because they’re all rooted in Latin. Participant 5 was learning Portuguese with the help of her husband, she used Duo Lingo, textbooks, and just like the rest Netflix to help her study. Participant 5 said that one of the ways she would study that seemed different to me, was that she would listen to a lot of music in Portuguese, look up the lyrics and try to study the language from the songs.
How might we...
How might we combine different mediums of language learning into the platform?
Ideas
• Recommending similar languages to the ones they already know.
• Having an option in the settings when starting a language you can pick if you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced. Depending on the suggestion you will get recommended different shows. For example, if you’re advanced you would get recommended shows where the actors speak quicker and more naturally.
• Recommending children’s shows for beginners
• After watching a show or movie you could quiz yourself, by watching clips of the show again with no subtitles and picking from a set of questions like, “what did they say?”
If I had more time...
• Create a more developed prototype to conduct user testings.
• Play around with eye tracking to better adhere to interaction design
• Better adhere to WCAG standards.
• Speak with subject matter experts and expand on white paper research
Takeaways & What I’d Do Differently
From working on this project I learned that when it comes to even massive companies like Netflix, through deeper research there are always fun and innovative ways for improvement. If I could do anything differently I would like to have more time to do user testing and develop a deeper prototype to see how this could work in action. While also gaining insight from the users as to what works and what could be changed.
